Famous for its valleys, Lachen is the base camp for the two main trekking camps of Sikkim- Chopta Valley and Muguthang. Here you can stare at the daunting mountains or opt for some adventure sports like trekking and hiking which are not meant for the faint-hearted people. Every year, during the summers, annual yak race is organized at Thangu, near Lachen. Must visit places in Lachen are Chopta Valley, which is a shutterbugs paradise, and the Gurudongmar Lake.

How to reach Lachen?
By Air
Lachen is not directly accessible from any airport, though the nearest airport would be the Bagdogra Airport (IXB). To reach Lachen, one have to first reach Gangtok and thereafter take a shared or reserved vehicle to Lachen, which is 118 km from Gangtok taking around 4-5 hrs drive.
One can also hire a vehicle directly from Siliguri or Bagdogra to Lachen
By Train
The nearest railway station to Lachen is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), about 230 kilometres away. The station, which is 20 mins drive from Siliguri, is the gateway for all Sikkim, Darjeeling and Bhutan. It is well-connected to major cities like Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai and New Delhi.

From mid March till June, Lachen experiences pleasant weather during the summer season. The temperature hovers 2°C to 24°C during the season. It is the best time to visit if you would like to escape the heat.
From July till September, monsoons causes swift rainfall, many a time causing landslides and road blockage. This is not the best time to visit.
From October till March, winter is the best time for travelling to Lachen. The temperature ranges between -9°C and -2°C during the season. It is the perfect time to visit for the spectacular view of the snow capped mountains. Snow adventures, vibrant festivals and bone chilling cold makes perfect time to visit to Lachen. But however, it remains inaccessible in December and January.
